Aharon Appelfeld's Badenheim 1939 follows a resort town's Jewish vacationers as ordinary life quietly gives way to catastrophe. This discussion series uses the novel's unsettling calm to examine how communities recognize, or fail to recognize, danger as it approaches. Participants will leave with a sharper set of questions to bring to both literature and history.
