Artists of the Holocaust
OPEN TO ALL SISTERHOOD &
TEMPLE MEMBERS
Please join us for a closer look at some of the artists who felt compelled to create, even as they faced grave dangers in the ghettos and concentration camps during the war.
Key Questions Explored:
· What motivated them to continue to create, even at risk to their own lives?
· What subjects were the main themes of their artwork—contrasting the works they produced for the Nazis and the ones they produced for themselves?
· How did they create their works of art in a world where there were virtually no materials?
Personal Reflection
Though not an expert, I researched this topic for a paper and was quite moved by the courage of these artists. Their resistance was truly inspiring and challenged the narrative I had always heard about Jews going into the camps like “sheep to slaughter.” Through slides of their artwork and videos, we will explore this topic together and, hopefully, be equally inspired by people who held to their values even under the most dire conditions. —Shelli Goldsweig
